For special conservation framing of canvas paintings, the aim is to be able to remove the canvas paintings in the future without damaging them.
There are many ways and using mending plates is one of the method to secure a stretched canvas painting in a frame without having to nail it.
Mending plates or offsets are screwed directly to the back
of the frame and overhang the stretcher so that it can be
attached and fastened without causing damage to the canvas. Removing the painting in the future is just simply by unscrewing.
